Coin Story The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 at Senlac Hill, 11 kilometres from Hastings, England. It began the Norman conquest of England led by William, the Duke of Normandy, later known as William the Conqueror. King Harold Godwinson of Wessex had taken the English throne after King Edward “the Confessor” died leaving no children. William of Normandy also claimed rights to the crown and stormed the Sussex coast defeating the English in a bloody battle that left thousands dead. The English fought a good fight which lasted most of the day, despite their opponents’ superior cavalry. In the end, the Norman invaders gained the winning advantage by adopting the tactic of feigning retreat and then turning on their pursuers. Harold was killed in the engagement and, after further skirmishes, William was crowned king on Christmas Day 1066. |
