Bisons reach a head-torso length of 3.80 m and a weight of up to 900 kg. For Native Americans, bison represented an important source of livelihood. Before the bison was nearly exterminated, several millions of the magnificent animals populated the North American prairies. With the help of strict protection measures, the population could fortunately be preserved - today, most bison herds live protected in the national parks of North America.
