The Jaguar is the largest predatory cat in America and belongs to the family of cats (Felidae) and the subfamily of big cats (Pantherinae). They resemble leopards (Panthera pardus) especially due to their extraordinary fur coloring, but the latter live on a different continent. Adult jaguars have practically no natural enemies and are among the apex predators in their territory. While the jaguar's habitat once spanned the entire American continent, from Texas to Argentina, its range has now been greatly reduced. Continued deforestation of the rainforest and illegal poaching led to the classification of the big cats as an endangered species.
