Product Overview

2015 1 oz Silver Coin - Forgotten Cities - Machu Picchu

First Coin of the Series - Very Low Mintage of 2000!

Machu Picchu is hidden away 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) above sea level, deep in the mountains of Peru. It is said that this forgotten city of the Incas was built as an estate for the Emperor Pachacuti.

Built around 1450 A.D. the city was abandoned a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Nestled on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range and the sacred Urubamba Valley far below, the majestic city was slowly lost to memory.

Centuries passed. While local people knew of the site, it was never discovered by the Spanish conquerors. Then one cold day in 1911, the story is told that a local Peruvian guide led Professor Hiram Bingham up a steep mountainside, making him the first Western scholar to ever lay eyes on this forgotten city.

To this day, many of Machu Picchu’s mysteries remain unresolved and lost to history.
In 1983 Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
