The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, composed by the renowned Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Premiering in 1892 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the ballet’s musical score is still instantly identifiable today thanks to Tchaikovsky’s use of the chime-like instrument, the celesta. In the story, the young heroine Clara receives a wooden Nutcracker from her toymaker grandfather on Christmas eve. Once the clock strikes midnight, the Nutcracker comes to life; and Clara embarks on an adventure with the Nutcracker and the other Christmas toys.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by various inscriptions. A snowflake symbol appears near the top, directly above the year of mintage. A unique serial number is inscribed near the bottom of the coin.
