This marvellous 2 Oz Silver coin is the second release in the astonishing “Gods” series, dedicated to Poseidon, the God of the sea. The coin presents wonderful and detailed Ultra High Reliefs, has a selective Gold plating, has an Antique Finish. This is the second coin of the series called “Gods”. The first coin of the series is Ares., and its was a huge hit and is commanding a huge premium.
Poseidon
Poseidon was one of the Twelve Olympians in ancient Greek religion and myth. He was god of the Sea and other waters; of earthquakes; and of horses. In pre-Olympian Bronze Age Greece, he was venerated as a chief deity at Pylos and Thebes. Poseidon was protector of seafarers, and of many Hellenic cities and colonies. In Homer's Iliad, Poseidon supports the Greeks against the Trojans during the Trojan War. In the Odyssey, during the sea-voyage from Troy back home to Ithaca, the Greek hero Odysseus provokes Poseidon's fury by blinding his son the Cyclops Polyphemus, resulting in Poseidon punishing him with storms, the complete loss of his ship and companions, and a ten-year delay. Poseidon is also the subject of a Homeric hymn. In Plato's Timaeus and Critias, the island of Atlantis was Poseidon's domain. His Roman equivalent is Neptune.
The reverse of the coin features the wonderful high relief image of Poseidon with his horses, holding his incredible gilded trident, over a detailed background of the sea with a sinking ship. On the bottom of the reverse, the inscriptions: “GODS” – the name of the series and “POSEIDON” – the name of the coin. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “NIUE ISLANDS” – the issuing country, “2018” – the year of issue and “TWO DOLLARS” – the face value.
