Presenting Dante’s journey in a language of coinage art, the coin dazzles with its smallest details crafted masterfully. Beautiful reliefs of this numismatic item depict the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, accompanied by the Roman poet Virgil. They discuss the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, as well as moral issues. The unique author's reproduction artistically tells the main plot of the poem. After passing through the gate of Purgatory proper, Virgil guides the pilgrim Dante through the seven terraces. These correspond to the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice, Gluttony, and Lust. The terraces are masterfully depicted in a high relief technique and with the use of hand-polishing.
The year, 2020, marks the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy, Dante's epic work that he completed a year before his death in 1321. That is why the obverse of the coin contains the inscription "700 The divine comedy" that symbolizes the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy.
