The sun is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma at the center of our solar system. Temperatures of around 5700 degrees Celsius prevail on its surface, from which light and heat stream into space. The sun’s diameter is about 1.39 million kilometers. Through its course in the sky, the sun divides the day and the year, making it revered by solar cultures since prehistoric times. The sun is the most important star for the earth and it's organisms.
