 Condemned to hold up the celestial heavens forever, Atlas received his punishment for taking the side of the defeated Titans in their war with the Greek Gods of Olympus. It was the famous Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator, who published his famous Atlas in 1595, that inextricably linked the Greek legend with collections of maps. Indeed, he is one of the more famous figures in Ancient Greek mythology today, as the Atlantic Ocean is named for him, as well as the legendary island of Atlantis.
