The alligator (Alligatoridae) is solely found in America and the People's Republic of China, where it lives in a variety of waters that may be standing or flowing. The name of the animal originates from the Spanish word "el legarto" and it is translated to "lizard". Alligators have a life expectancy of up to ninety years, can reach a length of more than six meters and can weigh up to one ton. Due to increasing destruction of their natural habitats by humans and climate change, almost all species are now classified as critically endangered.
