The Cougar is also known as the silver lion or mountain lion. Cougars are mammals, belong to the cat family (Felidae) and are more closely related to the domestic cat than to the lion. They are characterized by their extraordinary agility and strength - they are able to jump from the ground up to 5.5 meters high. While the habitat of cougars once stretched across the entire American continent, their range has now been greatly reduced. Adult cougars have virtually no natural enemies and are protected species in the United States of America - yet they are considered endangered and now live almost exclusively in areas unpopulated or sparsely populated by humans.
